SB Saga - KK vs TheRoutine

Description

SketchBattle was an online community which featured web comic and other internet artists dukin' it out with drawings. Makin' jokes, earnin' votes, and gettin' some easy publicity was what it was all about.
In theory.
In actuality, the whiny patrons and all other sorts of rigmarole reduced a once respectable site into a festering cesspool that the various owners apparently did not even bother to keep in operation.

That was the good; this is the SketchWar.

The original owner of SB, Sambro of SeeIT Solutions, registered a domain for what really could have been a sub-domain or even just a page on the main SketchBattle site. A store no one bought from? (The boxes of unsold merch was legendary.) Give it a domain name. A slightly different concept from the main site? Domain name, yo!

SketchWar was an elimination style tournament version of the regular SketchBattle. Unlike the other versions, quite literally anyone could sign up as long as they fit in the bracket. And, quite literally, everyone did sign up. I would not be surprised if there were more than a hundred participants.
Alleged participants.
Y'see, registration took place over a long period of time. Since anyone could sign up, they did and promptly forgot about its existence. I don't recall ever getting an e-mail notification about the blutty thing starting, and it was weeks after I decided to join.

Thus, you have messes of people who are supposed to remember to check this site at a certain day to see who their match-up is going to be. Pretty much, it just diluted to the people who frequented the site anyway; everyone else pretty much forfeited by not showing up. All someone needed to do was make a comic -- no matter how unfunny -- and win by default in the first round or two.

I'm sure a well-educated monkey could make a better system than this.

I, of course, did not get paired up against some schmo; I actually had a fairly regular member to go up against in the first round. I figured I would be soundly defeated by a more popular artist (which would be any artist) and thusly did not try at all. I went to his blog, found out he liked some pretty emo music, and scrawled out the above.

And then he didn't show. And I advanced. Because not even a SketchBattle regular was aware that the tourney had begun.
Because it is a stupid, stupid system.
